05-17-12 As we continue to receive showers on a weekly basis, we take our east Texas agriculture forward toward summer. Not only our pastures and gardens show growth and development but our home landscapes and flower gardens are looking good. The days continue to have longer daylight hours and that will continue until the latter part of June when we slowly start to see the days get shorter. We are into the peak growing season of the year. This year has proven to be a great year for container grown vegetables. My banana peppers are really producing. I should have placed one plant per large container rather than two. I will try to remember that next year. Marshall Regional Arts Council will hold their Annual Cajun Dance at Marshall Convention Center on Saturday, May 19 at 7:00 P.M. Arrive at 6:00 P.M. and “tune up” your Cajun dancing with the lessons offered. Tickets are $12 each which covers the food and music. Call 903 935 4484 for details or more information. “What we need is not great FAITH but FAITH in a great God.” This quote is from Adrian Rogers. Alexander Blueberry Farms, Deberry, Texas, will open for sales on Memorial Day. They are not having a “pick-your-own” program this year. There are other blueberry growers but I do not have any information from them. Call 903 622 4476 for more information. Last Tuesday U.S.D.A. Celebrated its 150th birthday as it was established in 1862 named the “Peoples Department” by President Abraham Lincoln. Its role in agriculture has changed many times; still it is of great importance to production agriculture and the branches which serve us well. A major part of USDA budget today is in food and lunch programs. Keep in mind that one out of every seven working Texans has an agriculture related job. Panola County Cattlemen’s Association’s PRCA Rodeo will be held in Carthage, Texas May 18 & 19. Since 1950, this is one of the area’s best rodeos produced by Andrews Rodeo. There are great seats and the best in contestants. National Emergency Services Week will be observed May 20-26 this year. The theme for this year’s EMS Week is “EMS More Than A Job, A Calling.” All in Harrison County should give words of encouragement and thanks to all those who work to protect lives and property in this county especially during this recognition week. They do a great job. Greater Marshall Chamber of Commerce held their annual “Business and Industry Appreciation Luncheon, Wednesday, May 16 with excellent attendance and deserving firms and individuals recognized. Leslie Chambers, Chairman of MEDCO in Marshall, gave a challenging factual report on the organization. Recognized for the “Shining Star Award” was Texas State Technical College with President, Randy Wooten accepting for the college. Large Business of The Year award went to Lewis Engineering. Winning Small Business of the Year award is Butler Construction. Boss of the Year went to Brenda Brown, Texas Bank and Trust. Employee of the year (a popular choice) winner is James Kinnard, Gecko Pest Control. This is not a criticism just a fact. The speakers could not be enjoyed due to the lack of an adequate sound system. That should be corrected in the future. A special thanks to Mark Hartt, Chairman of the event. Shop now for our hot weather plants like: lantana, moss rose, hybrid purslane, copper plant, pentas, firebush, ornamental sweet potatoes and there are many others. Buy vigorous plants that have not been stressed. “Sometimes the best way to convince someone he is wrong is to let him have his way.” Should you be approached by a high school student for a summer job, give them a listen. Many of our youth are willing to do summer jobs given an opportunity. I would suggest guidelines before the hire. No cell phones, girlfriends or boyfriends on the job, no radios or music while working. Be sure to set the pay, length and time of employment then add your requirements. Parents, no one is going to overwork your children. Attend as many school ending programs as you have time. It gives the youth a boost and you can know more of our future by seeing our present.
